The Applying to Law School Workshop offers a supportive, stigma-free space for system-impacted and formerly incarcerated students interested in pursuing a JD. Led by the BUS Graduate Intern, this 30-minute overview breaks down the essentials of law school admissions, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and financial aid options while addressing common misconceptions about applying with a conviction history. The session closes with an open Q&A to tailor guidance to participants’ questions and goals, reinforcing that law school is an attainable and powerful pathway for justice-impacted scholars.

The Bruin Underground Scholars (BUS) Transfer Empowerment Workshop supports system-impacted and formerly incarcerated students preparing to transfer from community college to a four-year university. In collaboration with the UCLA Office of Undergraduate Admission, the workshop provides participants with guidance on Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) and Transfer Alliance Program (TAP) pathways, UC transfer preparation, the transfer admissions process, admissions requirements, and FAFSA planning while connecting with peers and staff who understand their experiences. The workshop focuses on empowerment, transparency, and building a clear roadmap toward UCLA and other University of California campuses, ensuring students have the knowledge, resources, and support needed to successfully navigate their transfer journey.

Kasey Knudsen, saxophone Henry Hung, trumpet Rob Ewing, trombone Dahveed Behroozi, piano Lisa Mezzacappa, bass Jon Arkin, drums San Francisco-based saxophonist Kasey Knudsen leads her sextet in creating spacious and evocative compositions. Each piece weaves improvisation into melodic and rhythmic themes which develop into imaginative new directions. Alexa Peters at Paste magazine called Knudsen one of ten women who are redefining jazz, adding “along with playing cascading, virtuosic solos, Knudsen experiments with sound design and effects, transforming the jazz listening experience.” In addition to leading her own projects, Knudsen has also collaborated with artists including Tune-Yards, Fred Frith, Charlie Hunter, and more. In this memoir essay workshop, participants will bring a meaningful object from home—a photograph, keepsake, book, or everyday item—and use it as a doorway into their personal story. Through guided sensory prompts and writing exercises, students will explore how this object connects to their background, family traditions, identity, and hopes for the future. They will craft a short memoir essay inspired by their object, culminating in a celebratory share-out that honors each student’s voice, imagination, and sense of belonging. Led by author Margaret Chandra Kerrison who most recently published an essay collection Los Angeles Lost and Found. She is a creative consultant who has worked with Disney Imagineering and leading design agencies to craft immersive, place-based stories.
