The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) is a two-year scholarship program ($17,000) designed for outstanding students in Mellon-designated humanities and humanistic social science fields who intend to pursue a PhD and a career in academia. Join us for the first of six workshops as part of the Modal Interchange: Conversations on 21st-Century Performance Practices series with Vicki Ray, a Los Angeles based composer and pianist, who will join Wendy Richman in a conversation about concert programming and commissioning new works. Concert Curation IS Composition! Every musician presenting a concert is: a composer! In this talk I’ll explore different ways to think about concert programming and how the works you program constitute a meta-composition. Using musical examples I’ll explore the way connections between worlds – musical and otherwise – can create fresh, interesting juxtapositions that challenge (and hopefully delight!) the performer as well as the listener. Folded into this approach is the opportunity to commission new works that can tie previously unrelated pieces together and expand the repertoire of our instrument. Bio Described as “phenomenal and fearless” Vicki Ray is a pianist, improviser and composer. She has commissioned and premiered countless new works by today’s leading composers. Ray is a founding member of Piano Spheres and was, for many years, the head of keyboard studies at the California Institute of the Arts where she was named the first recipient of the Hal Blaine Chair in Musical Performance. She has appeared on numerous international festivals and was a regular member of the faculty at the Bang On a Can Summer Festival at MASS MoCA. Ray has been featured on the Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella Series as soloist and collaborative artist. Her widely varied performing and recording career covers the gamut of new and old music: from Boulez to Reich, Wadada Leo Smith to Beethoven. Notable recordings include the first Canadian disc of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with the Blue Rider Ensemble, the premiere recordings of Steve Reich’s You Are (Variations) and the Daniel Variations with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the first recording of John Cage’s Europeras 3 and 4. Her recording of Cage’s The Ten Thousand Things on Microfest Records received 2013 Grammy nomination. Vicki can also be seen playing the chromelodeon in the Los Angeles based PARTCH ensemble. Vicki Ray is a Steinway artist. More about Modal Interchange: Conversations on 21st-Century Performance Practices The personality of Los Angeles’s new music scene mirrors its city’s culture and geography as a whole: equal parts diversity and decentralization, in a battle for recognition and relevance that crisscrosses 650 freeway miles. The Modal Interchange series casts a wide net around LA’s new music community, hosting a diverse group of individuals who might not otherwise share the same artistic and academic spaces, in a series of lecture-workshops geared to an audience of performers. Modal Interchange is a series of six workshops through 2026-27. Each workshop focuses on an element of 21st-century performing, programming, and music-making in the world of contemporary music, with special focus on the topics’ relevance in greater LA: histories of experimental music and the avant-garde, commissioning new works, concert programming, listening as an audience member, listening as a performer, score-reading and part-marking, learning and practicing contemporary works, improvisation practices, and arts activism. This series is conceived and hosted by violist Wendy Richman and produced in partnership with the UCLA Center for Musical Humanities. California Education Learning Lab presents a high-energy, participatory debate on the purpose of higher ed in the age of AI, where everyone is welcome to speak, listen, and engage. Join us for a different kind of conversation about the purpose of higher education in the age of AI. Hosted by April Lawson of Insight Debate & Dialogue in partnership with the My Robot Teacher podcast, this high-energy, participatory debate invites attendees to explore a timely and potentially contentious question facing higher education. There will be no slate of experts at the front of the room. Instead, everyone present will have the opportunity to contribute. You are welcome to speak, listen, or simply take in the conversation. The goal is not necessarily to reach agreement, but to bring different perspectives into the open and engage thoughtfully across disagreement. Closer to the event, registrants will be invited to complete a brief survey to help select the specific resolution we’ll debate. Resolutions include statements such as “Higher education has become transactional rather than transformative” or “AI will do more harm than good in higher education.” Once selected, the final resolution will be announced and shared broadly in advance. This free event is open to Learning Lab's INSPIRE convening attendees and the broader UCLA/Los Angeles higher education community, including students, faculty and administrators, and other interested guests. No special expertise or preparation is required. Participants will come away with a model for a classroom, meeting, or town-hall ready format for discussing hot button topics in a constructive, meaningful, engaging, and safe way. Huib Schippers argues that the history of ethnomusicology shows an organic development towards public-facing work, and discusses the skill sets needed in the field to improve lives through music. Abstract: An interesting thing happened to ethnomusicology on its way to the 21st century. While beginnings in the 1800s kept it carefully away from direct interaction with the people who make music, culture and context became increasingly important in the second half of the 20th century. Towards 2000, an awareness had dawned that the musicians we work with and their communities perhaps should be at the center of our efforts. This first manifested as “giving back” research outputs (such as recordings) to the community, and later expanded into working with communities on an equal footing to serve their agendas in and through music. In this talk, I will argue that this very short history constitutes an organic development towards public-facing work, and discuss how applied ethnomusicologists require new skill sets to engage successfully with an exciting range of contemporary applied work in the realms of social justice, health, institutions, media, cultural sustainability and crisis recovery. Bio: Huib Schippers is one of the world’s leading scholars on the crossroads of music education, community music, music industry, cultural diversity, and sustainability. In over three decades of leadership roles in arts and academia, he founded the World Music School in Amsterdam (1990-1996), the World Music & Dance Centre in Rotterdam (2001-2006), and Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre in Australia (2003-2015). Next, he directed Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (2016-2020), served as UC Regents’ Professor at UCLA (2022) and as Visiting Professor at CCOM in Beijing (2023). In 2025, he was proclaimed Distinguished Changjiang Professor and became Founding Director of the International Centre for Cultural Sustainability at Zhaoqing University in China. Schippers has initiated applied projects on five continents and published over 200 publications for scholarly and general audiences, mostly on cultural diversity, artistic research, systems of learning, and cultural sustainability, including Facing the Music: Shaping Music Education from a Global Perspective (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2010); Sustainable Futures for Music Cultures (OUP, 2016) and Music, Communities, Sustainability (OUP, 2022). https://huibschippers.org/

Part of Ryusuke Hamaguchi: Early Works Presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Yanai Initiative When Drive My Car won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2022, on top of being the first Japanese film ever nominated for Best Picture, it may have appeared to many as if its director, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, had come out of nowhere to accomplish such a feat. Still others may have known him as the director of the four-hour tour-de-force relationship drama, Happy Hour, when it generated cinephile buzz on the festival circuit in 2016 or perhaps the spellbinding romance-by-way-of identity-crisis, Asako I & II, when it became his first film to premiere at Cannes in 2018. But well before these milestones, Hamaguchi was busy making shorts and features that have rarely screened outside of Japan. After graduating from Tokyo University in 2003 under the influence of John Cassavetes, Hamaguchi began directing in earnest before entering Tokyo University of the Arts where Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Pulse) became a mentor. As a student and beyond, Hamaguchi took advantage of a network of non-profit, institutional support to workshop projects that allowed him to experiment with like-minded actors, screenwriters and cinematographers. Indeed, a number of his films from this period (Intimacies, Touching the Skin of Eeriness) foreground the creative process as elements of his sublimely structured mid-career style come into view. With his latest film, All of a Sudden, in theaters this November, the Archive is pleased to present this selection of early works by Hamaguchi that confirm what was to come even as they defy expectations.
